Sussex Stargazing
The High Weald of Sussex has some of the darkest skies in the South East, and our hamlet of Tidebrook has very little light pollution, making it an ideal place for stargazing. The winter months often bring long nights and clear skies, which are perfect conditions for seeing the stars.
Our cosmic 5-night stargazing break is suitable for all ages and levels of experience, and includes:
• An exclusive evening at Newhouse Farm hosted by Brian Mills, a well-known local astronomer. Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, Brian will host an exclusive evening with an informative introductory talk before you head out into the garden to view the night sky through a telescope and with the naked eye. Hosts, Richard and Dawn will be on hand to provide suitable night-sky refreshments!
• Tickets are also included for a Stargazing evening at Herstmonceux, an interactive science centre that has been operating in the former home of The Royal Greenwich Observatory since 1995.
• During your stay you will also enjoy an astronomy-themed afternoon tea with hosts Richard and Dawn Furlong.
Our Sussex Stargazing breaks are offered in late-autumn, winter, and early-spring to coincide with the moon's cycle and give you the best opportunity of dark skies. Please contact us to check our 2023/24 dates.

Contingency
As you would expect, we do have a stargazing contingency plan should cloudy skies interfere! We will always try to reschedule a stargazing evening during your stay but if that’s not possible we will retire to the comfy Oast lounge to quiz our private astronomer with anything from historical astronomy to discussing the various types of telescopes that amateur astronomers use. And we’ll perhaps serve an extra glass or two of wine! And in similar circumstances, stargazing nights at Herstmonceux are replaced by interesting planetarium-style talks.
